At the International Symposium on Remote Sensing on Environment (ISRSE, 2007), held in San Jose Costa Rica, H. Taubenböck, A. Roth und S. Dech received the Best Paper Award.

Lena-Delta 2006 expedition team is back home

On May 22, 2006 the German-Russian expedition "Lena Delta 2006" of the Alfred-Wegener-Institute (AWI), Section Periglacial Research started into the siberian arctic. Main focus was on microbiological, soil science, hydrological and palaeogeographical investigations of permafrost areas in the Lena Delta.

New topic installed

A new research topic "Atmospheric Water cycle"has been installed. Lead is Prof. Kottmeier of Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe.

HGF – EOS PhD awarded

Mathias Bochow, HGF – EOS PhD of GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam, received the Poster Award for his presentation „Potential of hyperspectral remote sensing data for the automated mapping and monitoring of urban biotopes“ held at the 1st EARSeL Special Interest Group Urban Remote Sensing workshop. The workshop took place from March 2-3, 2006 at the Erwin Schrödinger Center, Berlin – Adlershof. It was organized by the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL) and the Humboldt University, Berlin.
 

Summerschool 2006
July 24-28, 2006
From July 24 up to Juli 28, 2006 Helmholtz-EOS the first summerschool, located in the AWI guesthouse at Helgoland island has taken place. Main topic this year was Ice and Ocean. Additional all PhD candidates have presented their theses and discussed it with the participating experts.

Lena Delta 2006

The German-Russian "Lena Delta 2006" expedition of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Ocean Research (AWI) is scheduled to begin on 22 May 2006. The science focus will be on microbiological, soil science, hydrological and palaeogeographical investigations of permafrost areas in the Lena Delta.

DISFLOOD Project launched

On November 17, 2005, the constituent meeting of the DISFLOOD project was held at German Aerocace Center at Oberpfaffenhofen. With this project a disaster information system for large-scale river basins in Germany will be developed.

Summerschool 2006

From July 24. up to Juli 28, 2006 Helmholtz-EOS will organize a summerschool at Helgoland island.

New cooperation contracts established
November 17, 2005
Helmholtz-EOS cooperates with the United Nations University Bonn and the University of Hamburg, Biocenter Klein Flottbek within the research topics "Land Surface Processes" und "Disaster Management".
Additional cooperations are envisaged.
 
First NaDiNe expert group established
November 17, 2005
On November 7, 2005, the constituent meeting of the flood experts group was held at GeoForschungZentrum Potsdam. With this event, the Helmholtz-EOS Natural Disasters Networking Platform (NaDiNe) project entered a new stage.

Floods in Bulgaria: Participation of NaDiNe in a EU expert commission
July 3 and 4, 2005
After a very rainy May and June, heavy rainfall on July 3 and 4, 2005 produced distrastrous floods in NE Bulgaria. The floods of the Danube tributary rivers produced enormous damage to infrastructure, agriculture, industry and houses. Five men lost their lives.
The government of Bulgaria asked the European Union for help.

A workshop on the Natural Disasters Networking Platform is being held at the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam. Participants are from the national crisis management operational level as well as experts of the Helmholtz Association.

The kick off meeting of the PhD Programm has been held in Berlin. Twelve young scientists present their PhD theses. Participants are among others the directors of the participating Helmholtz Centers and the speaker of the research areas.
